Here’s one of those “Smoking Gun”-style documents from the Washington Post — a U.S. embassy cable on the worsening conditions for its employees in Baghdad. The Post got its hands on it just as Bush was traveling in secrecy to Iraq for a brief visit he then used to triumphally tout the improving circumstances in Iraq. This is grim stuff, a must-read on life in Baghdad — perilous, short of electricity and fuel and increasingly marked by religious-based influences, such as restrictions on dress and oppression of women.
