He just won’t let it alone. He just won’t admit a mistake and move on . He keeps trying to peddle the lie that Charlie Daniels had something to do with his son’s failure to vote from Mississippi (he was not in Iraq as Lagrone had claimed) in 2004. There’s plenty of legitimate stuff to talk about in the race for secretary of state. Lagrone’s insistence on continuing to push this story — and blame the “liberal” press (AKA the Democrat-Gazette) and lie about them, too — shows the fundamental insincerity and dishonesty of his apology. Baxter Bulletin:
On Wednesday, Lagrone told the Mountain Home crowd “off the record” that he blamed the “liberal press.”
“Anytime you stand up for the American military, anytime you stand up for them, the liberal press is going to take you down at any chance they can,” he said.
Lagrone said that when he had made the statement, he had only one minute to speak and the statement made it sound like his son was serving in Iraq when he voted. He added he communicated poorly, and his campaign manager released the information while he was on vacation.
The problem is that the news release was printed in a number of places, including here, and never repudiated. Lagrone also repeated the remark at rallies around the state.
Liberals don’t hate the military. (Indeed in Washington, you could assemble a far bigger fighting force from the liberals than from the chickenhawk brigade in the Bush administration.) They hate lies.
