Word comes today of an effort to change Little Rock’s government — an idea we support.

The Committee for Accountability and Equal Representation will announce Monday a petition drive to put two proposals before city voters — 1) to create a strong mayor with veto power and 2) to elect all city directors by ward. We don’t have the full specifics, but generally favor both these propositions.

The backers will be at the polls Nov. 7 gathering signatures for a future election. They’ll need signatures equal to 15 percent of the city turnout to put the measures on the ballot.

Backers include Acorn, businessman Walter Smiley, state Rep. Joyce Elliott, former city board candidate Kevin Dedner and a variety of grassroots activists. Don’t look for 50 for the Future on the steering committee. Democratic representation is a threat to  the business establishment’s way of doing business.
