The Little Rock Airport Commission meets tomorrow. Sounds like there may be a development on the controversy that arose last week when Commissioner Carl Johnson mentioned that he might be interested in seeking the minority contractor portion of the airport’s concession business. He said he and partner Sherman Tate were considering it, a bad idea for a sitting commissioner in the view of many. State DEQ chief Marcus Devine, who could be leaving state employment with the new administration, and a partner said by Johnson to be PR man Stacy Williams also was reported to be interested. Former state Sen. Bill Walker had given up the minority position recently to mount his unsuccessful run for mayor.
Development: Sounds like Johnson is rethinking making a bid for the contract and could announce that he’ll not pursue the business tomorrow. If he did go forward, he said, he’d resign from the commission, compete for the contract with others and simply be no longer a commissioner if he lost out. I’d say he’s leaning toward dropping his bid for the work.
“I wouldn’t ever want to do anything that looked suspicious,” he said.
