Operators of the GPS Gin in Portland have turned a three- to four-acre plot across from the gin into a community garden, its produce free to the public. Volunteers help pick vegetables for those too old or infirm to do it themselves and even make some home deliveries.

According to [GPS President Philip] Privett, this season’s summer crop includes three varieties of squash, two varieties of cucumbers, sweet corn, okra, tomato plants, watermelon, cantalopes, egg plants, a variety of peppers, purple hull peas, butter beans and greens. Later in the season, he said, additional greens, broccoli, and cabbage will be added.

And they say newspapers never print good news.
