The legislature looked over athletic spending at state high schools yesterday. I wish they’d turned these numbers — ranked by percentage of budget — into per pupil spending. These would have been striking, if unavoidably higher at smaller schools.

Percentage spending leader — Yellville-Summit at 7 percent — spent more than $500 per student on sports. Fort Smith spent over $200 each in spending more than $3 million for its more than 13,000 students.


Another figure missing from the assessment is how much is spent on interscholastic sports (most of it) and how many students participate in those sports. In Fort Smith, for example, it’s way short of 13,000, I’d bet.
