We had a wonderful Christmas Eve, hooting at Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid in the National Lampoon take on a family Christmas.
Now, I’m waiting for my kids to wake up. It will be a while. At 23 and 28, they sleep soundly. The excitement about “Santa” gifts, which were retired finally after Fritz graduated from college, has dimmed. But Ellen and I are still eager. We’ve been up since 5:15 or so, filling the stockings, warming up the monkey bread, fiddling with the elements of the Christmas dinner to come.

Same-old same-old for family and old friends gathered round: Shrimp cocktail, au gratin potatoes, peas and mushrooms, homemade rolls, ribeye roast, relish tray, trifle, figgy pudding, Stilton, chocolates.
