Because of declining state revenues, the state Health Department is cutting money that would have been spent on the trauma system’s emergency services, salary for trauma system staffers, the Arkansas Community Health Centers and charitable clinics.
Gov. Beebe last week instructed the department to cut its budget $3,631,885. Of that, $1,803,620, to be split between emergency providers (for defibrillators) and the community health centers, had been put on hold by the state revenue stabilization act anyway and would not have been allocated, the department said.
The remaining $1,828,265 in cuts will come from a 1 percent reduction to health centers in funding available for hiring, travel and training ($628,265), reduced salaries to potential trauma system staff ($261,000), a 1 percent reduction in grants supporting the community health centers ($100,000) and charitable clinics ($10,000), a 1 percent reduction for supplies for the flu immunization program ($29,000) and allocations of other tobacco tax funds to the Cancer Coalition ($200,000), the Infant Autopsy Review ($300,000) and Stroke Care Task Force ($300,000).
The department remains “fully committed to establishing a trauma system,” director Paul K. Halverson said in the announcement.
