Blogger Jason Tolbert got approval from the secretary of state’s office to erect a Festivus pole (Seinfeld fans will get it) on the Capitol grounds. But he’s chickened out on erecting it.
However, his experience might be useful for others who might like to take up the banner (pole) of Festivus.
When the religionists went nuts over the winter solstice display court ruling and vowed all manner of silly additions as some sort of a statement, I hoped they all would follow through. That would give Secretary of State Charlie Daniels the room to do the obvious — end all temporary displays on the Capitol grounds and thus end any concern about creation of a public forum in which competing ideas must be welconme.
The religionists, of course, want only the New Testament Christmas story represented on the taxpayers’ lawn. Everyone else should just shut up and go away.
