Constance Sarto, who was among the group formed in 1992 to save the historic Mosaic Templars building on Broadway and then became first director of the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, has retired. Her retirement took effect March 1. Heather Register Zbinden is serving as interim director while the Department of Arkansas Heritage searches nationally for a successor of what is now a state museum dedicated to the black experience. It is in a new building constructed after the old one was destroyed in a fire. I’m a little surprised at Sarto’s retirement.
Don’t forget Frank Broyles’ scheduled appearance at the museum at noon next Tuesday to talk about the integration of athletics at the University of Arkansas. Broyles’ long history is complicated on the subject — he was a latecomer to integration as football coach but also was the man who hired Nolan Richardson. Q&A could be interesting.
