The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee welcomes new 1st District Republican nominee Rick Crawford with a nifty little gotcha.

It caught him telling the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette he would not support privatizing Social Security. What sane person would after the recent market meltdowns?

NOW. “Crawford said he doesn’t support privatizing Social Security, but wants to ‘reform’ the entitlement program through ‘fiscal discipline’ and cutting other programs. He said he would oppose cutting benefits, raising taxes or getting rid of income caps on social security taxes. He didn’t specify what other programs he would cut or elaborate on how fiscal discipline would save Social Security.” [Arkansas Democrat Gazette, 5/20/10]

That’s now.

THEN Crawford said Social Security was at a “tipping point” and he signed a pledge to divert Social Security taxes into private retirement accounts.  [LauranIngram.com, accessed 5/16/10; Rick Crawford for Congress, 3/26/10]
