The commission studying new sources of highway money is talking, among others, about a tax increase (not politically likely in today’s climate) or slowly stealing a portion of existing sales taxes that now support the rest of state government. You’ve noticed, haven’t you, that the state is adequately funding state prisons, schools and health care and thus can easily give up some of this money to build roads?

State employees get no pay raise in the coming fiscal year. They’d happily give up raises for another couple of years so the highway contractors could get some general revenue, I”m sure.
