Circuit Judge Collins Kilgore ruled today that Republican Tommy Fite, a candidate for House District 83 covering parts of Crawford and Franklin counties, is not eligible to run for the office because of a 1984 federal misdemeanor conviction involving misuse of public money.

Here’s the opinion. A state Supreme Court decision in another case earlier this week in which a municipal candidate was removed from the ballot for a past misdemeanor made this outcome inevitable. Democrat Leslee Milam Post is now unopposed.

Funny, Fite’s response seems to be that he should win on a technicality. Never mind that he was judged a crook. He’s appealing. He’ll lose.
