We broke the news about some ill-advised Facebook posting on rising Secretary of State Mark “Moonbeam” Martin’s page. State Rep. Donna Hutchinson said she sure hoped Martin would stop the secretary of state’s outrageous practice of providing voter registration forms in Spanish. You have to speak English to be a citizen, Hutchinson erroneously declaimed. (To be naturalized, yes. To be a citizen, no.)
Martin responded: “I fully intend to take care of this issue.”
Stupid answer and the first of what no doubt will be many (in league with his dishonest attempts to explain away his dubious legislative expense claims for home office costs). See, the Arkansas Constitution requires the secretary of state to have forms in English and Spanish. Unless Martin pulls a Faubus, and interposes himself between the Constitution and the people, he can’t do a damn thing about it. Que pasa?
Fox 16 asked him about his statement at his appearance at Political Animals Club today. Jason Tolbert was on hand to record Martin’s unhappy moment before the camera. He’s now saying he didn’t mean what he said. (Presumably he’s gotten some schooling he lacked.)
