Just in time for the Democrat-Gazette’s annual, tearful huzzah for a man who fought to destroy the United States and keep black folks in chains comes word from Searcy County that Marshall Mayor Jim Smithson flew the Confederate Flag over city hall there through the long holiday weekend — including on MLK Day — in honor of Robert E. Lee’s birthday. The flag was finally taken down yesterday by members of the city council who had objected to it going up in the first place.

The story is already starting to creep onto the national newswires.
