With virtually no dissent, the House today passed another pointless tax break, on purchase of school clothing and supplies the first weekend in August. One representative suggested it will somehow create in Arkansas the kind of sales created when his family goes to Memphis for the Tennessee tax holiday. Shop in Memphis or Forrest City? Tough choice.
The bill will shift dates of purchase, no more or less. The savings will be minimal to families. The economic development will be nil. The money lost to the state would be better spent on schools or something else useful — filling potholes on that highway to Memphis maybe.
