Interesting poll results from North Carolina, a Southern state.

A majority of voters support either civil unions or marriage for same sex couples. Of those under 30 years old, 67 percent favor approval of same-sex unions. Independents as a whole are even more supportive than Democrats. Said the pollster:

This is a classic example of somewhere Republicans risk antagonizing the very voters who put them into power last year by focusing on social issues. Independents overwhelmingly supported the GOP in 2010 but these numbers make it clear they weren’t voting for the Republicans to make this issue a priority. This is one of those things where the GOP has to decide whether it’s willing to sacrifice some of the goals of its caucus to have a shot at staying in power for more than two years.

IN THE SAME VEIN: New Pew polling shows movement toward approval of same-sex marriage (there’s an equal split, but the question was marriage only, not civil union) and solidly toward legal abortion. Unions are viewed favorably, too. Government still has some problems.
