A good backgrounder in the Wall Street Journal on the coalition pushing in Arkansas and other states for legislation to force collection of sales taxes by Internet merchants such as Amazon. Though the effort is styled as defense of Main Street merchants, the big push is coming from retailers like Walmart, Target and Sears. And I’m with them on this. A book or towel bought by an Arkansas customer should carry the Arkansas state sales tax no matter who delivers it.
The issue is complicated by federal law. The news in the Journal story is that the growing state-by-state push for equity may finally force congressional action on a uniform law.
