MARY: Died last week.

  • MARY: Died last week.

In Defense of Animals, an animal interest group, has called on the Little Rock Zoo to send its remaining elephant, Ellen, to a sanctuary for her final years rather than to continue to look for another companion after the death last week of the zoo’s other elephant, Mary, 60. The group says other zoos are closing elephant exhibits because of the cost of providing adequate space and companionship and Little Rock should follow suit.

The group’s letter is here.

I’m expecting a copy of the Zoo’s response later today or tomorrow.
