For those interested in the slow march to end discrimination on account of sexual orientation, there’s a cliff-hanger political vote brewing in the New York legislature this week.
The head count has now moved to within one vote of committed senators prepared to pass legislation to allow same-sex marriage in New York. The Republican-controlled Senate has long been the stumbling block, but two have come over to the side of justice and others are wavering under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s lobbying effort. There might be a vote this week. State voters overwhelmingly favor the law. A victory in New York, blue state or not, would be big.
