* RACIAL EPITHET: Texas Gov. Rick Perry is on the defensive again — and the offense is led by a black Republican presidential candidate — over his Texas hunting camp, long known as “Niggerhead.” The debate now is how recently Perry or his family moved to eradicate the name, once painted prominently on a rock at the camp.

* RACIAL ALIGNMENT: Elsewhere, the New York Times looks at continuing political realignment in Mississippi and the prospect that the Democratic Party there will eventually be almost exclusively black people. There’s fear that a black gubernatorial candidate (not to mention a black presidential candidate) will have a negative impact on down-ballot races in rural areas where some white Democrats still hold office.
