- PRIVY COUNSEL: Ken Harper with his one-hole protest.
Funny protest in Monticello Sunday, covered by Patty Wooten’s Seark Today full-service website for that corner of the state. I hope she doesn’t mind my sharing a photo she posted there of a protest by District Judge Ken Harper, who set up this faux privy on the lawn of city hall to protest a “no public restrooms” policy enacted by Mayor Allen Maxwell.
The outhouse was placed by the window of Maxwell’s office.
Harper, who emphasized he was exercising speech as a citizen, not as a jurist, says the law requires public restrooms in public buildings.
A reader who tipped me to this article said Maxwell’s posted notice about restrooms marked his second warning since he was elected that the public best take care of business elsewhere before seeking to do business at City Hall.
