Gov. Mike Beebe took the stand today in Sen. Jack Crumbly’s lawsuit that redistricting didn’t make his majority black Senate district black enough to guarantee his election. One theory is that the district was drawn to help Rep. Keith Ingram, who’s running against Crumbly for the Senate seat. From Stephens Media:
Beebe testified today that he considered Crumbly a legislative ally and that he believed during the redistricting process last year that Ingram was going to run for Speaker of the House, not for the Senate.
“The last thing on my mind was for Sen. Crumbly to be beaten,” Beebe said. “I didn’t know he was going to have an opponent, and I dang sure didn’t know that Rep. Ingram was going to run. I thought exactly the opposite.”
