  • THE MYSTERY JERSEY: This photo is flying around the web, fueling a long-running buzz on a potential change in Razorback uniforms this fall. If you haven’t looked you have no idea how important this is to some football fans, particularly a change to grayish black over red or white. What was wrong with thick cotton jerseys in bright red with block white numerals, huh? And leather helmets?

If nothing better comes along, this may be it. Noted in passing:

* HILLARY IN 2016: In which The Fix blog of the Washington Post jumps the shark in horse race journalism with an extended thumb-sucker on a Hillary Clinton presidential candidacy in 2016.

* HERB RULE CAMPAIGN KICKOFF: Democrat Herb Rule, opposing Republican Rep. Tim Griffin’s re-election bid in the 2nd Congressional District, will begin his campaign Thursday with food, music and endorsements at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at his headquarters on the southeast corner of the Tanglewood Shopping Center, 7509 Cantrell Road near Georgia Street.

* ENTER THE WINGNUTS: A gang of Republicans, including Sen. Missy Irvin (ALECite, Mt. View), are sponsoring a luncheon Monday for Tim Griffin. Speaker is U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (Bonkers, Tenn.) Just Google Marsha Blackburn and nuts and see what you get. Birther, anti-Social Security, etc.

* FRACKED: ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) worked its magic with a pro-fracking law in Ohio. Count on the Republican/ALEC claque in the Arkansas legislature to have copies of the same legislation in their hip pockets. In fact, you might as well outsource the legislature to the Koch Bros. and Teresa Oelke if the current crop of Republicans takes the majority. They’ll be writing all the bills anyway.

* CORPORATIONS JOIN GAY MARRIAGE FIGHT: Politico reports a sea change in the fight for equal rights for sexual minorities, as evidenced by broad support from major corporations (none of those based in Arkansas) for the the case to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act. There’s also scant indication of corporate support FOR continued discrimination. That’s progress.

Speaking of human rights: Chad Griffin, the Arkansas native who now leads the Human Rights Campaign, will speak at noon Monday at the Clinton School. He’ll be interviewed by state Rep. Kathy Webb. He’s led the fight against the California proposition to bar same-sex marriage.

* FOND MEMORIES: A commentator for the Chronicle of Higher Education has written a glowing tribute to Dr. Walter Kimbrough’s management as Philander Smith College president. He’s now leading Dillard University, but the writer says he provides lessons for leaders everywhere.

* THE WAR ON NUNS: The Catholic hierarchy’s crackdown on nuns continues, with denunciation of a book written by one on sexuality. It is hard not to conclude from official papal actions and enforcement by American bishops that birth control (not abortion, birth control) and homosexuality are more pressing issues than outreach to beleaguered immigrants and the poor. It is a sad day for a church that has been a bulwark of social justice to become obsessed with sex to the detriment of the oppressed.
