Fox 16 in Little Rock and KASN, Channel 38, are being sold by Newport Television of Kansas City to Mission Broadcasting of Westlake, Ohio.

The transaction is related to Nexstar Broadcasting’s purchase of other stations owned by Newport. Nexstar already owns KARK, Channel 4, and KARZ in Little Rock.

Wikipedia says Mission owns 15 stations.

All of Mission’s stations are located in markets where Nexstar Broadcasting also owns a station, and all of Mission’s stations are managed by Nexstar through shared services and local marketing agreements—allowing duopolies between the top two stations in a market or in markets with too few stations to allow duopolies.

It’s too early to know about what the sale means to existing personnel and station operations. The Times has been a news partner with Fox 16, which has been a leader in expanding the length of local news programing and around-the-clock use of the web for breaking news. It also was an early adopter of social media like Twitter to report breaking news. Dynamic websites and busy Twitter accounts are now staples of local TV news operations.
