CNN is providing a useful feed of information coming from the Aurora, Colo. police chief and other sources about the early morning shooting that left 12 dead and 59 wounded. Among the details:

* PROTECTION: Suspect James Holmes wore “black, military or police-style tactical gear including a helmet, vest, leggings, throat protector and groin protector.”

* WEAPONS: “He said three firearms, an assault rifle, a shotgun and a Glock handgun were fired. Another Glock was found in the suspect’s vehicle.” More from MSNBC:

Oates said the gunman had four weapons: two 40-caliber Glock handguns, a Remington 870 single-barrel pump shotgun and a Smith & Wesson AR-15 assault-style rifle. Three of the weapons were found in the suspect’s white Hyundai parked at the back entrance to the theater; one of the handguns was found in the theater.

Also from CNN:

The shooter was carrying a drum magazine, which is capable of holding more than 100 rounds of ammunition, the source said.

A National Rifle Association spokeswoman says a callous-seeming Twitter message Friday morning was posted by a staffer who hadn’t heard about the shooting.

“Good morning, shooters. Happy Friday! Weekend plans?” read the tweet, from the pro-gun group’s American Rifleman journal’s account.
