The Arkansas native’s life is here, at the Encyclopedia of Arkansas. Born in Green Forest, she lived in Little Rock and attended Pulaski Heights school, but her family moved to California after her father, a state legislator, was killed in an elevator accident at the Capitol. The philosophy she advanced in her 1962 bestseller “Sex and the Single Girl” helped build Cosmo into a dominant worldwide brand.
A recent New York Times article described the magazine’s ascendance and mentioned that Brown still kept a pink office there. Earlier this year, she gave $30 million to Stanford and Columbia for media innovation.
