- STILL CAMPAIGNING IN ARKANSAS: Bill Clinton, shown in his 1974 congressional race, is back campaigning in Arkansas, by radio, 38 years later.
The Arkansas Black Political Caucus has bought $10,000 worth of radio advertising in which former President Bill Clinton urges votes for Democratic state legislative candidates and criticizes the writings of Republicans Loy Mauch, Jon Hubbard and Charlie Fuqua, all embraced by the Republican Party despite pro-slavery and other extremist remarks.
Clinton’s ad says writings by the Republicans, though he doesn’t mention them by name. “are not the kind of ideas that will help us create a 21st century economy in Arkansas.” Says Clinton:
“We simply can’t afford to let ideology prevail over good, old-fashioned common sense. The views of many Republicans here in Arkansas are out of touch with our values.”
Are they? Clearly, Republican Party leadership’s continued support of the candidates and Chair Doyle Webb’s pronouncement that he expects the candidates to win suggests they think their values are majority-favored.
