President Obama is talking this morning about responding to gun violence. Among his comments posted on Twitter:

* The fact that this issue is complex can no longer be an excuse to do nothing.

* Any actions we must take must begin inside the home and inside our hearts.

* We need to work on making access to mental health care at least as easy as access to a gun.

Regarding that last statement: I cannot help but note that Arkansas Republicans yesterday brought up reductions in spending on community mental health services as an alternative to balancing the state Medicaid budget. A state official said the cost of unintended consequences would be huge. He should be commended for restraint for not calling the idea — which would mean reducing already inadequate mental health services — insane.

Obama will name a task force on gun violence, led by Vice President Biden. The NRA pushback will begin shortly. Already Republicans in Arkansas are slavering to label incumbent Democrats like Sen. Mark Pryor as soft on guns for proposals that haven’t even been made. Whatever they are, you may be sure they’ll be unacceptable, beginning with limits on high-capacity ammo magazines. You never know when you might need to shoot a deer 30 times.
