I’m about done. The line is open. Finishing up:
* THERE’S NO UNRINGING THE BELL: Huge traffic and comment everywhere over Republican Rep. Nate Bell’s insensitive Twitter comment about the Boston manhunt, a gibe at liberals and gun control. Even his own Republican colleagues distanced themselves from Bell. Republican House Speaker Davy Carter jumped to be the first to apologize for the whole state. Gawker was just one of many major websites that ripped Bell and drew huge comments from readers who ripped him as well. Bell himself finally said he was sorry about his timing and sorry if anyone’s feeling were hurt. But he never simply apologized for the comment. Indeed, he made abundantly clear he wasn’t apologizing for the content of his remarks, a fact noted by several in calling for his resignation. One of those calls came from a New Hampshire legislator who wrote us:
Rep. Bell’s apology is not sufficient.
I am a 2000 graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law. My wife is an Arkansas native who was raised in Monticello and graduated from UCA. We know that Mr. Bell’s views don’t reflect those of his constituents or the people of Arkansas.
Bell’s comments are deeply offensive to those of us who live in the Greater Boston area. We have family members and friends who are being terrorized by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The people of Boston have shown remarkable courage. patience, and humanity during a time of tragedy. To see an elected official use the pain and suffering of our neighbors turned into an opportunity for partisan grandstanding is beyond insensitive, it is barbaric.
Rep. Bell should do the right thing and consider resigning his seat.
