Shane Broadway is a lock to continue to lead the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. But he’ll be able to do so in the future without “interim” in front of his title.
Broadway was the only candidate under consideration for the job after an application process had boiled down to Broadway and an Arizona applicant who helpfully withdrew. The five-member search committee today recommended that the Higher Education Coordinating Board hire Broadway. The Board will likely have a special meeting next week to confirm the pick, subject to Gov. Mike Beebe’s certain confirmation.
Broadway, a former senator, was Beebe’s pick to head the agency long ago, but lacked the advanced degree the law required to hold the job on a permanent basis, so he’s led it as an “interim” director. The 2013 legislature, with bipartisan support, changed the law to remove the degree requirement, opening the way for a selection process in which Broadway was eligible.
