New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie set about damage control today for the revelation that his staffers engineered a massive traffic tie-up as political payback.
I have come here today to apologize. I’m embarrassed and humiliated by the conduct by some of people on my team,” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said at a press conference Thursday morning. Christie says he terminated his deputy chief of staff Bridget Anne Kelly, who helped orchestrate the move to close access lanes to the George Washington Bridge.
New e-mails obtained by CNN Wednesday show members of his staff and some of his political appointees were involved in what appears to be a political vendetta against the mayor of Fort Lee, New Jersey, who didn’t endorse Christie’s re-election bid.
The apparent retribution came when Christie’s staff orchestrated the closure of access lanes to the bridge, a move that caused serious traffic jams and turned Fort Lee into a parking lot for four days in September. The jam delayed school buses for hours and stalled an EMS crew trying to attend to emergencies.
Christie has long denied that he was aware of the lane closures until they were happening.
Sure, Christie didn’t smirk along with the rest of his bullyboys when this happened.
Christie is kind of the reverse Bill Clinton, who’d ignore a line of friends to shake hands with an enemy. There’s no enemy too insignificant for Christie to beat up. And his staff knew it.
PS — I CANNOT WAIT for Jon Stewart to go to the video to counter Christie’s “I am not a bully.”
