The Pulaski County sheriff’s fffice announced today that they had  arrested a UAMS student for raping a 16-year-old girl who said she’d been molested since she was 8 years old.

Paul Wayne Perkins, 37, of 10 Villas Drive in Sherwood is charged with one count of rape and one count of second-degree sexual assault in the case. Both are felonies. He was arrested yesterday at UAMS, and held on $100,000 bond.

According to an incident report issued by the PCSO, on April 15, 2013, the girl’s mother told investigators that her daughter had disclosed an improper relationship with Perkins after being questioned as to why Perkins was giving her money and providing her rides.

CORRECTION: Though the sheriff’s report described the suspect as a doctor at UAMS and our original account reflected that information, a UAMS spokesman said he is not a doctor at the med center. He is a Ph.D. student in biochemistry and does not work or study in patient care areas. UAMS’ Leslie Taylor says Perkins also has a UAMS medical degree but has never practiced at UAMS.
