Conner Eldridge, the U.S. attorney for the western district of Arkansas, announced today the indictment of Kevin Bolton, 38, in a kidnapping that resulted in the death last year of Cassie Carter, 20 of Gurdon.

The case involved authorities in Clark County, the FBI and the sheriff of Cherokee, N.C., where Carter’s body was found in a car trunk last year. Carter, mother of a newborn child, was last seen with Bolton, news accounts at the time said.

The indictment says Bolton abducted Carter March 12, 2013 and killed her sometime around March 20. The indictment said the crime involved “torture or serious physical abuse.”

Bolton made an appearance in federal court in El Dorado today and will be held in custody pending trial. The charge may be punished by the death penalty.
