The Arkansas Travelers announced today that Dickey-Stephens Park in Little Rock will host a benefit baseball game on Tuesday, May 6 between the baseball teams of Vilonia High and Mayflower High. In an odd bit of coincidence, both teams feature an eagle as their mascot.
Admission to the game is free, but donations to help the towns as they rebuild will be accepted from the crowd during the game by each school’s cheerleading squads, and all money spent on concessions will be donated to help those directly affected by the devastating tornado that decimated large swaths of those towns last Sunday. Mayor James Firestone of Vilonia and Mayor Randy Holland of Mayflower will throw out the first pitches for the seven-inning game, after a moment of silence. Gates open at 4:30 p.m, with the first pitch at 5:30.
Great idea, great cause, and sure to be a healing night of baseball.
