The week begins slowly. But I have heard Little Rock will learn City Manager Bruce Moore’s pick of a new police chief this week. There are three finalists, including Deputy Chief Eric Higgins from in-house to succeed the retiring Chief Stuart Thomas, whose last day is June 27.
Also a prediction on the City Hall beat, if not for this week, before long: The City Board will defeat the Dickson Flake-pushed proposal to install a B-grade convenience store/gas station at the problematic Third and Broadway intersection in the middle of a government/visitor corridor far better served by other uses.
If — when — the city Board defeats this proposal maybe Mayor Mark Stodola can then give some thoughts to the quality of his Planning Commission appointments given that they overwhelmingly overrode the recommendations of our professional city planning staff. Happily, the staff produced plenty of reasons that will allow the board to defeat the proposal without appearing arbitrary.
