Attorney General Dustin McDaniel today approved the ballot title for a proposed constitutional amendment to legalize the possession and use of marijuana. A previous ballot proposal had been approved by McDaniel to legalize the medical use of marijuana.
Technically, the proposal approved today, submitted by Robert L. Reed, would “decriminalize the possession and use of the cannabis plant and all products derived from the cannabis plant in the state of Arkansas.”
The attorney general had rejected some earlier versions, which began as medical marijuana proposals. The other committee working on medical marijuana said it is going to have to depend on volunteer canvassers this year because a national group that had supported the effort that put a medical pot amendment on the ballot in 2012 was not providing financing this year. That amendment failed about 52-48.
The campaign only has a month, until July 7, to gather 78,000 signatures.
