Thanks to Arthur Paul Bowen, president of the board of the Hillcrest Residents Association, for a batch of photos of traditional July 4 festivities in our neighborhood. Above, participants in the Midland Hills annual Fourth of July parade down Midland Avenue, a Cleaverish tableau as always. Below is one of the patriotically bedecked participants in the Firecracker 5K, which follows a downhill course from the Heights to War Memorial Park, with a long downhill stretch along Van Buren.

Not many July 4s begin with temperatures in the 60s. My own morning walk was blissfully cool and the smell of grilling chicken already perfumed the air along Hill Road.
