The Democratic candidates are observing Women’s Equality Day today, the anniversary of the passage in 1920 of the amendment that gave women the vote. The issue is paycheck fairness — an bit of legislation that most Republicans oppose.

The Democrats, for example, have J. French Hill, the millionaire Little Rock banker and Republican candidate for 2nd District Congress, on tape saying that — while he supports the idea of equal pay for equal work — he opposes legislation to accomplish it.  Patrick Henry Hays, the Democratic candidate for 2nd District, supports paycheck fairness.

Hill is no populist, that’s for sure — he supports cuts in the corporate tax rate but opposes a minimum wage. Notes the Democratic Party:

French Hill Opposed Equal Pay Legislation. In 2014, Hill opposed legislation to ensure equal pay: “In my judgment, people who do work and work the same hours, perform the same task, have the same background, do precisely the same kind of contribution obviously should be paid for that work, and in a similar fashion. I’m not a supporter of legislation to do that.” [Delta Grassroots Forum, 6/13/14]

At Political Animals Luncheon, Hill Supported Corporate Tax Cuts for Banks Like His, But Opposed Minimum Wage. At the Political Animals luncheon, Hill said that he supported cutting the corporate tax rate, but would not increase the minimum wage, arguing that “the idea of a minimum wage restricts the economy.” [Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 6/19/14; KUAR, 6/18/14]
