Garrick Feldman at the Arkansas Leader dug up this fine story last week:

A murderer who is serving a life sentence without parole was installing a wall mat this week at the Cabot Junior High North gym as part of a prison work-release program.

Glen Martin Green, who works inside the prison system for Arkansas Correctional Industries, has been in the factory and repair program at the Tucker Unit since 1990.

Green was part of the prison work crew at the junior high on Monday with an unarmed supervisor. School Superintendent Tony Thurman didn’t know Green was at the school until we contacted him on Thursday.

Small world. I wrote a story in 1974 about the slaying for which Glen Martin Green, now 60, was convicted.

An Air Force sergeant, he kidnapped 18-year-old Helen Lynette Spencer at Little Rock Air Force Base, then raped, tortured and killed her. He dumped her body in Lonoke County, where he got a life sentence in 1975.

Gov. Mike Huckabee was considering extending clemency for Green until Feldman started raising hell about it in 2004.

Green is a prison trusty and has a good prison record, Feldman learned. He is supervised, but not by an armed guard when he leaves the prison to work on prison industry projects. School and law officials weren’t happy to learn of Feldman’s discovery.
