The state is about to embark on replacement of voting machines, a step that’s long overdue and expensive.

So, a reader notes, isn’t it interesting who’s picking up meal tabs at a coming meeting of county clerks, many of whom conduct early voting at courthouses and have a say in county equipment purchases.
The clerks will have a conference Feb. 25-27 at the Wyndham in North Little Rock. They are entitled to per diem payment for meals and hotel rooms are covered. But the schedule shows that ESS will pick up lunch on the main business day and Unisyn will pay for break refreshments and dinner. Fair and balanced.
Anybody else think taking freebies from people seeking millions in public business is not good policy?
Never mind. The legislature does it three meals a day and cocktail hour when the session is rolling. Why should county officials be any different.
