The state Department of Finance and Administration  filed a certificate of indebtedness Friday in Circuit Court against state Sen. Jeremy Hutchinson. The certificate says he was indebted to the state for $2,501.15 in individual income tax for the period of Dec. 31, 2013.

When I first reached Hutchinson, he said he was unaware of the claim. He said he’d gotten an extension on paying his 2013 income taxes, but though he’d paid them last fall. “I promise if it’s owed, it will be paid today.” He called back later to say he’d instructed that a check be delivered to DFA, but he hadn’t yet been able to reach someone to clarify the issue.

Hutchinson was named in a complaint last month for being behind on payments on his GMC SUV. That complaint was dismissed March 4 after payments were brought up to date.

Hutchinson, who’s divorced, joked, “I need a wife.” He said his financial affairs could use better organization.
