BuzzFeed is circulating a video filmed earlier in the year in which Mike Huckabee jokes to the 2015 National Religious Broadcasters Convention that he wishes he “could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE.” UPDATE: Looks like the original video has been removed from YouTube, but BuzzFeed still has a clip of the pertinent section at the above link.
“I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today,’ ” Huckabee said, to chuckles from the crowd “You’re laughing because it sounds so ridiculous doesn’t it?” He also issues the now-standard canard that laws which forbid discrimination against trans people are endangering children by allowing men to share public bathrooms with little girls.
Good one. What better imagery to ridicule the needs of trans people than a high school locker room? After all, the LGBTQ equality issue probably holds no greater urgency for anyone than for trans teenagers, who are at a vastly higher risk for suicide than their peers as a result of bullying, rejection and mockery.
And, of course, a down-home joke about sneaking your way into the girls’ shower for fun times can’t help but evoke shades of Josh Duggar, given Huckabee’s full-throated defense of the family in the past week.
To the former Arkansas governor, this is all of the same wholesome piece — a sexual-cultural nostalgia for a time when we ran the wrong kind of perverts out of town on a rail but gave a tsk-tsk and a wink to straight young fellas with a budding proclivity towards sexual harassment. He yearns for a return to a simpler America, when trans people were easy fodder for comedy — right along with teenage boys doing creepy things to girls. Plenty others may laugh right along with Huckabee, but I don’t think it’s a majority of Americans anymore.
The Internet is getting plenty of mileage out of this, as would be expected. The Daily Beast can’t resist the headline “Huckabee Fantasized About Being Trans.” Why not — run with it!
The video itself was uploaded to YouTube by World Net Daily, a website that generally positions itself somewhere on the rightward fringe of the Tea Party. Jezebel opens its summary this way:
It’s been a few days since Mike Huckabee has said anything offensive enough to make me want to jump out a window, so here’s a fresh reminder that he’s one of the worst human beings alive. Huckabee recently called trans-inclusive bathrooms a “social experiment” and once again pointed out that the trans community wants to molest all kids.
