Mike Huckabee is really going all in on bigotry-as-political-strategy. Fox News columnist Todd Starnes writes today about a letter the former Arkansas governor is sending to conservative leaders around the country.

“I refuse to sit silently as politically driven interest groups threaten the foundation of religious liberty, criminalize Christianity, and demand that Americans abandon Biblical principles of natural marriage,” Fox quotes from the letter, which I’ll post when I find it.

“When an individual is faced with a decision of bowing to Caesar or bowing his knee to God – he has to take his stand and get on his knees to God instead of Caesar,” Huckabee told Starnes. “This is where we are rapidly heading.”

“That does mean civil disobedience. It means we are obedient to a power that is not only higher than the current government, but a power that was the basis of our government.”

“People are going to have to begin to be willing to lose things in order to preserve the country and their freedoms. When people are told by their government what they can and can’t say, it’s one step away from being told what they can and can’t do. All other liberties begin to erode.”

For the zillionth time, how does the extension of rights to one group curtail those of another?

UPDATE: Tippi McCullough, president of the Stonewall Democrats of Arkansas, responded with an appropriately withering statement.

The Arkansas Stonewall Democratic Caucus of Arkansas feels that it is time to speak up and out about the anti LGBT comments MIke Huckabee has been quoted as making daily in various news media formats.

In response to Mike Huckabee’s latest performance about his notion of the perceived threat of same-sex marriage, the Arkansas Democratic Caucus of Arkansas condemns his hate-filled and inflammatory remarks.

Same-sex marriage threatens no one’s liberty and freedom in any way, religious or otherwise. Equality and freedom for oppressed people can be obtained without taking away from other’s rights. The only losers when equality is achieved are the bigots who shamefully hide behind religion and use God’s name in vain to perpetuate hate.

MIke Huckabee fled Arkansas as soon as he could and has since moved further away from the Arkansas values of tolerance, respect, and love.

He continues to wage a sham campaign based on bigotry and instead of pulling the country together to unite on important issues, he spouts hatred. He seems intent on bowing down to money not God.

Shame on MIke Huckabee and his campaign staff for promoting hate and bigotry and using it to separate and divide people.
