Since I mentioned the silence yesterday, I should note that the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette editorial page got around to mentioning Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court marriage ruling this morning. It was disapproving in many respects, it seemed to me. It included a reference to Nazi Germany and encouraged those unhappy with the ruling on religious grounds, closing, “Onward, Christian soldiers!”

More clearcut (and on point) was John Deering’s editorial cartoon. I can’t link it just yet, but it shows the Arkansas Supreme Court emerging from a bomb shelter (“panic room”) at the Supreme Court Building with a character saying: “You can come out now! You’re all off the hook!” This important local angle on the case (no state ruling in an “expedited” case) remains largely unexplored by the newspaper, though we’ve found it interesting.
