John Maddox, a Mena lawyer, has announced on Facebook that he’ll be seeking the state House seat now held by Rep. Nate Bell of Mena. Bell, who recently left the Republican Party for independent status, has said he won’t run again.

Maddox is the grandson of long-time Rep. Ode Maddox of Oden, a power in the pre-term limits days. Ode Maddox — who served 42 years, including a number as chair of the important Insurance and Commerce Committee until term limits ended his career in 1998 — was a Democrat, as virtually all legislators were then. John Maddox is chair of the Polk County Republican Committee and promises to be a “strong conservative on both social and fiscal issues.”
