Fresh off Twitter from Arkansas Democrat-Gazette staffer Cyd King:
Greenberg, 78, has had some health setbacks recently.
We’ll inquire about continuing contributions.
UPDATE: The Democrat-Gazette has a story up. It says he’s relinquishing page supervision but will continue to work and write editorials. The transition occurs Aug. 1. Barham tells me Greenberg also will continue to contribute columns.
The news drew a statement from Gov. Asa Hutchinson:
“Paul Greenberg is an Arkansas institution. His editorial pages at the Pine Bluff Commercial and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette have always been must-reads — provocative, insightful and never shy. As Paul would put it, he told it ‘with the bark off.’ The good news is that even though Paul is retiring as the Editorial Page Editor at the Democrat-Gazette, he will continue to write columns and editorials. I think I look forward to reading those; well, most of them.
“I’ve been the subject of Paul’s editorial pages many times. While I don’t always agree with what he writes, I have always appreciated his personal civility and courtesy.
“Paul, it has been ‘wholly a pleasure.’ Good luck, enjoy at least partial retirement and, as always, I’ll be reading you.”
