The Log Cabin Democrat in Conway reports on a telephone poll of Arkansas on the Republican presidential primary that showed Donald Trump in the lead among Arkansas voters, even ahead of former Gov. Mike Huckabee, who now lives in Florida.

The researchers surveyed 428 likely Republican presidential primary voters for the poll. Trump received 26 percent of the votes, while Huckabee received 22 percent. Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz tied for third and fourth, with 9 percent each.

I know nothing about the polling outfit, but the results are in line with national results by many other polling groups.

With a solid majority for Trump, Huckabee and Cruz — a trio in a dead heat for the Most Outlandish trophy this season — you get a clear picture of politics at the state level in Arkansas. It’s why Gov. Asa Hutchinson is so reluctant to act against the wishes of the extreme end of his Republican Party. The extreme is the majority.

The pollster, Opinion Savvy, is based in Atlanta. They also polled all Southern states Aug. 4 in a poll sponsored by Newsman and that poll, too, showed Trump with a lead of 28-18 over Jeb Bush. Huckabee, who pins hopes on an “SEC primary” held on the same day in March, as Gov. Hutchinson pushed the legislature to do, was well back with 5.8 percent.
