Arkansas State University said the New York Institute of Technology’s College of Osteopathic Medicine has received approval from a national accreditation agency to open a campus at ASU in August.
ASU says it expects an inaugural class of 115 students. The only medical school in Arkansas currently is at UAMS. The Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine has also said it hopes to open an Arkansas campus by fall 2016, in Fort Smith.

The hope is that additional med school seats in Arkansas will alleviate the need for more primary care physicians, particularly in rural areas. Concerns have been raised, too, about adequate residency programs for new medical college graduates.
