It’s a slow Sunday, so let’s venture into the wide world of sports.
How about those Trojans? Little Rock (nee UALR) beat DePaul, a member of the Big East Conference, 66-44 on the road at DePaul last night and now the team is 8-0 for the season.
Did new Athletic Director Chasse Conque make a good choice for coach of the men’s basketball team in Chris Beard? Early returns look good. UALR may have a men’s team now worthy of its women’s team.
The headline is a reference to the sort of college — call them mid-majors, directional schools, non-football, whatever — that have worked their way to national prominence in basketball, a sport where a handful of talented players guided by a good coach can make a very big difference.
Could Little Rock be home this year to the state’s best college basketball team?
Pack the Jack, as they say. (It’s the cozy 5,600-seat on-campus arena built with a gift from financier Jack Stephens.) Next home game is Dec. 20. But coming up Wednesday is a rematch in Conway with UCA, beaten by the Trojans at home 79-73.
I could get excited about a hometown college athletics success story.
